‘So much nicer than going out,’ she’d say. The plain fact was she was afraid of that world outside. Afraid it would remind her that time had passed.

Day 17 Favorite line from a film
from Sadie Thompson
Let me explain.  It’s more the sentiment behind the line than the actual line.  I saw the 1930s adaptation, Rain, first, and I nearly cried (well, not really) because it perfectly explained the hypocrisy of fundamentalist religious reform.  Both films are certainly problematic in terms of racism and the fact that Sadie had to be redeemed~ by going off with O’Hara (although that can’t be changed because they’re both adaptations of a W. Somerset Maugham story).  I could go on and on about slut-shaming, empowerment, marriage and reformers, but I’m not.  I just like deconstructing, which is why I like this story.

Sadie Thompson ftw. And I must tell you something funny about this, Gloria did alot of cursing in the movie which is obviously not on the title cards, if you are good at reading lips you can see it. For this line she actually said ‘You psalm singing son of a bitch!’ which is even better! lol Also, years after this was filmed Raoul Walsh, who plays Handsome, would call her up and have her repeat the line to him every once in a while lmao.

Mark my words, one day I will find an opportunity to say this to someone. One day!
